Bagged Rubbish Trial In Bishopdale Block
Three hundred properties in- and round Farrington Avenue, Bishopdale, have been chosen for the Waimairi County Council’s trial of paper-bag rubbish collection.
The trial, to be held for three months from the first bag collection on June 4, will enable the council to make up its mind whether to introduce a county-wide bag system.
The block chosen was a good cross-section of houses as well as the Bisbopdale shopping centre and other shops, said the assistant county engineer (Mr J. D. Annan) yesterday. There were also pensioners’ flats and a primary school. “The properties covered by the pilot scheme will, be provided with holders and enough bags to cover normal usage of one a householder for a week,” he said. “Between May 19 and 23, each property will be visited by council staff so that any questions can be answered, and the holders will be placed in position. At the end of the trial, users will be asked to complete a questionnaire as a guide to the council.”
Mr Annan said the bags were weather-proof, fly resistant, easy to use and hygienic. While one bag a week was normal usage, there was no restriction on the number the council would col-
lect, and more bags, if needed could be obtained from the council. There was no need to wrap refuse, but glass and sharp material should be wrapped. Hot ash should be allowed to extinguish before being put in the bag. Properties in these streets will participate:—Farrington Avenue, Bethel Crescent, Maple Street (including Hornsby Street from Farrington Avenue to Maple Street); Isleworth Road (from Farrington Avenue to Leacroft Street), Leacroft Street«(from Isleworth Road to Raleigh Street), Raleigh Street, Newmark Street, and the Bishopdale shops. All these streets are “collected” on Wednesdays.
