Unemployment Higher
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 7. Unemployment in New Zealand rose by 165 in the fortnight ended May 2, the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said tonight, but the total was more than 5500 fewer than at the corresponding time last year.
On May 2 there were < 2969 registered unem- * ployed, compared with ( 2804 two weeks ago, and v 8530 a year ago, Mr Shand said. Male enrolments with the Labour Department were 2194 and female, 1750. Vacancies notified to the department totalled 3516 i (2603 for men and 913 for 1 women). The vacancies inclu- s ded 1029 for skilled men and f 335 for skilled women. Social security figures i showed that 1878 persons < were on unemployment bene- ’ fits, Mr Shand said. c
