LECTURER STATUS

“Insufficient Attraction”

The status of lecturer was insufficiently attractive to draw high-quality applicants into secondary teacher training, said the principal for the secondary division of the Christchurch Teachers* College (Mr E. P. Blampied) in his report to the college council last evening. Lecturing and tutoring work which dealt ta the main with graduate students was sufficiently demanding and challenging to warrant appointment ta the category of senior lecturer or above. Representations should be made to the Education Department to this effect, he said.

Even when an applicant did accept an appointment in the lecturer class, it was difficult for him to avoid feeling some sense of grievance when he found himself tutor to a large group of graduates while senior lecturers might be tutors to much smaller groups.
