SUMMIT RD EXTENSION

Councils Will

Investigate

A limited investigation of the possibilities of continuing the construction of the Sum-' mit Road from its terminus at Gebbies Pass along the crest to Hill Top was authorised by the No. 14 District Roads Council at its annual meeting yesterday. For many years the Mount Herbert, Wairewa and Akaroa County Councils had been “pressured” by civic groups and individuals to complete the road, said Akaroa’s chairman (Mr G. P. A. de Latour). “We would like agreement in principle for the three counties to make a limited preliminary investigation with a view to recommending the National Roads Board to do something,” he said. “It is not an attractive piece of country at the moment, but the line of the unformed road had been surveyed for at least a century. The road would traverse thousands of acres of land with no roads except that Detween Little River and Port Levy. “It would be a big advantage to land-owners to open this country up to increase its production, and it would be one of the finest scenic drives in New Zealand.”

The councils did not have the resources to build the road, and honed, if its feasibility was shown, that the board would be interested.
