Stampede At Funeral
(N.Z. Frees Assn.—CopgrigM)
NEW DELHI, May 5. Policemen used steel-tipped bamboo canes to hold back stampeding crowds trying to get a final glimpse of the body of President Zakir Husain of India as it lay in state in the Presidential Palace today. The crowds bad broken through a tight cordon guarding the Presidential Palace as the doors were about to be shut to enable the President's family to hold private services before the State funeral.
In scenes reminiscent of the funerals of Indian political leaders, scores of people were injured as they collapsed under the stampede. By the time the public viewing of President Husain's body had ended, nearly one million Indians had paid their respects to the 72-year-old Moslem who captured the hearts of his countrymen in the 23 months he was President
