Elephant Fish Study

The Marine Department plans to charter a fishing trawler again this year to continue its research into elephant fish off the Canterbury coast.

This year, Mr A. Coakley, the fisheries scientist in charge of the programme, will concentrate on tagging mature fish to check movements around Banks Peninsula and north and south of the peninsula.

He wants. to know where they go, how fast they grow and the distribution of ages in the elephant fish population. ■

Mr Coakley hopes to be able to estimate what quantity of elephant fish could safely be taken by commercial fishermen without the breeding stock being affected. “It appears that fishermen are not affecting stocks at present,” said Mr Coakley, “but fishing pressure can change over the years.”
