Wallaby Found

The body of a male wallaby, described by a former Waimate resident as the biggest he had seen, was found by bushmen on the north side Of the Waimakariri riverbed near Swannanoa.

“Nobody believed us when we told them about it on Monday night,” said Mr P. Morris, of Kaiapoi, last even-

ing. The wallaby apparently was bit by a vehicle at the weekend and was dead when found on the north stop-bank near the Eyre River diversion.

The bushmen who found the wallaby were incredulous that this animal should be found there. Mr W. Joli, of Amberley, intends to keep the pelt as proof.

As far as can be ascertained this is the first time that a wallaby has been found north of the Waimakariri River.
