FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation. —The anticyclone to the east of New Zealand is losing intensity; a deepening depression from the north-west is moving on to the North Island, and a cold front is advancing over the South Island from the south-west. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Southerly winds, strong in exposed places; cold, with occasional rain and snow down to 2500 feet on the high country. Marlborough and Nelson.— Moderate southerly winds, fresh in exposed places; scattered showers and long fine periods; cold, with snow down to 2500 feet on the ranges. Buller and Westland.—Fresh southerly winds; cold and mainly fine, except for snow showers on the ranges.

Outlook: showers along the east coast, but fine elsewhere.
