National Day

Sir, —It is, or should be, common knowledge that the Treaty of Waitangi was not the point of annexation of New Zealand by Britain, and as such is worthy of no special mention. The British Parliament, of its own volition, passed an act ratifying the treaty, thereby making New Zealand a colon.. The treaty was dreamed up as a sop to British humanitarians. It would, as “Disillusioned Empire Loyalist” suggests, be more appropriate to choose some other significant date as our national day. We used to celebrate Dominion Day. Is there no reason why this should net be revived? Or what about Captain Cook’s 1 sighting of New Zealand, which may be regarded as a more appropriate introduc-' tion of our nation to the mod- 1 ern era?—Yours, etc, HARVEY S. DEANE. April 29,. 1969.
