An Illegitimate Society?
Sir,—New Zealand’s population trend, based on today’s policy of inaction and unreality, opens up the prospect of 4 new society. We no loffiger take the lead n social reforms. However, it appears that we could take the lead in developing an entirely new society based on our existing legal, moral, and social pat? terns. Our “legitimate” population is on the decrease—one at the main causes being the morally add sociably acceptable contraceptive pill, which is, universally available to married couples. Our “illegitimate” population is robustly increasing, year by year—the main causes being unavailability of the pill to the unmarried, and inhumane, outdated abortion laws. Therefore we can look forward to a society composed of “illegitimate” human beings whose character and personality development is based on a pat-
tern of rejection, instability, and socially unacceptable standards of living and behaviour.—Yours, etc, NANCY SUTHERLAND. April 30, 1969.
