Crest Designs Almost 200 designs have . been received for the badge ' which may be carried by the new Royal New Zealand Navy frigate Canterbury. This was not as many as had been hoped for, said a Navy spokesman yesterday. For the Waikato’s crest more than 300 designs were submitted. More than 5000 entry forms were put out by the Navy for distribution to Canterbury secondary schools. Entries for the competition would close this month, the spokesman said. Furnishings Sold The contents of the Central Hotel, Colombo Street, realised $6OOO when they were sold at auction yesterday. About 200 persons attended the sale and the 500 lots were sold in four hours. The auctioneer was Mr J. L. T. Dyer, of George Anderson and Son, Ltd. Tunnel Machine Subject to the arrival of hydraulic couplings and the satisfactory testing of the hydraulic equipment in the factory, the machine designed to clean the Christchurch-Lyt-telton road tunnel should be ready for trials in the tunnel about the middle of May, the maintenance superintendent (Mr L. E. Olliver) reported to the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday. Rail And Cycle Christchurch had the fourth lowest losses on suburban railway services in New Zealand, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said at a . meeting in Christchurch yes- ( terday. The Christchurch losses were lower than Dunedin’s. Mr R. C. Neville, of the Waimairi County Council, suggested that the losses in Christchurch were low because there were no suburban train services. Mr Gordon re plied that, from his expert ence in boyhood, Christchurch was so suitable for bicycles and cycling was so cheap that suburban rail service: could not compete.
“Lamentably Weak”
"New Zealand’s marketing intelligence in almost every field of production at present is lamentably weak,” Mr W. E. Rowling, member of Parliament for Buller, said in an address to the University of Canterbury Fabian Society yesterday.
Whales Off Kaikoura Sightings of whales off the Kaikoura eoast have been reported recently for the first time for several years. As many as eight whales- have been seen at one time. Last Sunday, Mrs G. Gray, of Goose Bay, saw through a binocular two whaling vessels catch a whale, which was hauled on board the larger vessel. Mrs Gray estimated that the vessels were eight miles off shore. At other times up to five vessels have been seen working off the coast. Cattle Buyers Two Canterbury breeders were among buyers at t'e Aberdeen Angus dispersal sale of the Maraekowhai Developing Company, Ltd, Tokirima, described as being New Zealand’s largest Aberdeen Angus dispersal sale. Mr J. R. Fraser, of Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, paid $6OO for a bull calf and $325 for a cow, Mr B. A. McLachlan, j of Amberley, bought a heifer calf for $l5O. '
