Beard (United States) missed a 45ft birdie attempt on the final hole that would, have given him a tie. Another Australian, B. Crampton, who bogeyed the i last hole for a final 69 and 278, was second equal with Beard.
R. J. Charles (New Zealand). who shared the thirdround lead with L. Trevino (United States) finished with a 73 and was alone in fourth place at 279. Trevino, the United States Op-n champion, had a 74 and tied for fifth on 280 with D. January (United States), who had the day's best round —a sparkling 65—and B. Greene (United States).
