Wallace, said the club, which is responsible for British entries in the annual fixture, had informed the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and the New York Yacht Club that : with great regret it was un-i able after all to take part in, [the elimination trials Four challenges for the 1970 race were submitted (after the 1967 series. The one [from Australia was accepted? isubject to preliminary trials; Iwith Britain, France and' Greece. This established a new basis for the America’s iCup. and the Royal Dorset; [Yacht Club agreed in principle, said Dr Wallace. “Later, however, it became apparent that the incidence of current taxation and the country’s present economic difficulties, coupled with the fact that it is no longer a direct contest between Britain and the United States, have not been conducive to encouraging private individuals and small syndicates, who have hitherto sponsored British challenges, to give the support necessary for a fullscale effort, without which the campaign could not have had any chance of success." he added. /
