TRAINING IN FIJI

Soldiers From Burnham

Twelve soldiers from the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps depot at Burnham Military Camp will leave Christchurch early next week to take part in military training exercises in Fiji. The men are all replacements for the New Zealand services’ medical team in South Vietnam. In Fiji they will get experience in tropical health and hygiene, sanitation, administration and communications procedures and in working with indigenous peoples.

The Burnham party will consist of seven men from the medical depot, two from the 3rd Field Ambulance, one from the Casualty Clearing Station, and two Territorial medical officers—Major M. E. Shackleton, of Dunedin, who was the leader of New Zealand’s first civilian team to go to South Vietnam, and Captain N. M. F. Officer, of Te Awamutu.

The officer commanding the medical depot at Burnham (Major P. H. Callaway) will be in over-all charge of the troops during their training in Fiji between March 28 and April 11. Next week the Burnhambased soldiers will join at Ohakea 58 soldiers from the Regular Force depot at Waiouru who are completing an instructors’ course.
