CLOSE FINISH TO CRICKET TITLE

Although Riccarton has no chance of winning the 1968-69 Canterbury club cricket championship, its pace bowling trio—R. C. Motz, K. A. Nicholson and J. W. Kiddey—may well have the final say to which club will get “The Press” premiership pennant.

Riccarton should extend West Christchurch-University, at present clinging to a onepoint lead, more than Sydenham may press the second team. High School Old Boys. Only an outright win in this the last round, will assure West-University of the title. A repeat series of results as the first round, when 'Old Boys beat Sydenham outright and West-University took first innings points against Riccarton, would give -Old Boys the title. The return of G. T. Dowling promises to add stability to West-University’s batting but the club will be without the test centurion, B. F. Hastings. • Old Collegians has progressed reasonably well this season and should have a fine chance of beating East Christ- . church-Shirley, which will be without B. R. Taylor. A continuation of the pitiful St Albans batting performances would allow Lancaster Park, only five points

behind, to change positions at the bottom of the ladder. Only J. M. Ruston has a batting average of more than 17 for St Albans.
