UNIVERSITY SYSTEM

W.Z. Press Association >

WELLINGTON, March 19. The universities could not be exclusively oriented towards industry but must have regard to their function of providing teachers, developing skills in research and pursuing inquiry “for the sake of inquiry,” says the report of the manufacturing committee of the National Development Conference, released today. The report says the committee concluded that there was nothing inherent in the university system, however, which inhibited univeristy staff from orienting a degree course towards industry, perhaps as an option at the middle stages of the degree.

Whether this was done depended on the attitude of the university staff.
