New Effort To Regain Islands

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, March 19. Japan has intensified her efforts for the return of four Northern Pacific Islands that fell into, Soviet Union hands in the Second World War.

i She has announced plans 1 1 set up an association which will try to regain the islands of Etorofu, Habomai, Shikotan and Kunashiri, off the northern tip of Japan, which constitute a problem at present preventing the two countries from signing a formal peace treaty marking the end of the war. The new association will have funds to publish periodicals, hold lectures and extend relief to repatriates from the island. The move to establish the association follows a decision last week to show the four islands clearly as Japanese territory in 1989 editions of official Goverpment maps.
