Trawler For Akaroa

The St John, a Nelson trawler, is to fish from Akaroa. The new owner, Mr L. G. Todd, said yesterday that the 20-year-old craft would go into service immediately and would be the only fishing boat in Akaroa fitted with radar.

The St John, he said, was 51ft long, had a 144 ft beam and a draught of 7ft 6in. A stern trawler, it had a diesel motor and an auxiliary engine. Its freezing space could store 10 tons of fish.

Mr Todd said the trip from Nelson to Akaroa had taken 33) hours. He said he would be running the trawler with Mr M. Middleton, of Nelson, who had helped him to sail the boat to Akaroa.
