Breeder's Third Win In Beef Contest

For the third time an entry from L. P. Chapman, of Mount Somers, has won the carcase section of the beef cattle competition held by the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The entry was an 18-month Aberdeen Angus. Chapman cattle also won in 1964 and 1966. The Methven association now conducts the Mid-Canter-bury export competition and quarters from the top six animals will go forward for judging in Britain alongside district entries from all parts of the country. Last year the district was placed second. In the absence of Mr Chapman, the trophy was accepted by Mr F. Hayman yesterday at a field day at the Belfast works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd. Mr Hayman confirmed afterwards that two other beasts among the top 10 had been bred by Mr Chapman. The judges were Messrs E. Bell and S. Parker, supervising graders for the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, and A. Stanbury, supervising grader for the company at Belfast. The top 10 placings were: L. P. Graham, field officer for the New Zealand Dairy Board, judged this competition with Mr Bell.
