Lost Money
Domic came right up to expectations at Ashburton yesterday by giving the others a galloping lesson in the last furlong of the Lauriston Two-Year-Old Handicap. Mr and Mrs J. F. Tutton’s Ironic colt was backed as if unbeatable after an unlucky third at the Banks Peninsula meeting and his place backers lost 30 cents in each dollar. Win backers did not find $1.25 very rewarding, either.
H. N. Rauhihi found a rails run for Domic in the middle of the field, then brought him wider to go after Pocomoto, Eastern Gold, and Lloyd, which made the leading line. Lloyd took a short lead going to the furlong, but he could not "live’’ with the long-striding Domic close to home.
Rauhihi kept waving his whip alongside the colt's neck to keep him straight, and the favourite pulled away quickly to win as he liked.
It was close for the minor placings, Lloyd lasting for second from Tudor Hall and Strathganistan. which were almost in line.
