NOT PUT TO TEST
Aconite At Ashburton The. North Inland Jockey, J. A. Messent, who built a good record on stayers while serv« Ing his apprenticeship at Riccarton, found his trip south for the Ashburton meeting yesterday worth while when he won the Barford Hack Handicap on Aconite. Aconite, one of the last of the stock of Cassock, sire also of Great Sensation, had been an unlucky fourth at the Banks Peninsula meeting at his previous start, and yesterday’s win, a comfortable one, was fitting compensation. Messent rode Aconite confidently in the leading group from the atvt, and kicked him away to put a break on the others early in the run home. At the end Mr and Mrs G. B. Trolove’s five-year-old was a length and a half better than Cyclone, one of the maidens in the field. Lady Velvet came from the middle of the field for third a head back: then there was a gap of two lengths to Chota, which shaded Dory.
Jockey In Hospital The Riccarton jockey, E. G. Low, suffered slight concussion and facial injuries in a race fall at Ashburton yesterday, and was sent to the Ashburton Public Hospital. Low was riding Daytime, which was brought down by Moody Blue near the home turn in the Trial Stakes. Moody Blue’s rider. J. F. Harris, escaped injury and rode later in the day.’ Moody Blue’s fall was not caused by any other runner and, according to an official report, the condition of the track was not responsible.
