CORUMBA PICKED FOR OPUNAKE CUP

"The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NTH. The light - weight, Corumba, could go close to winning the Opunake Cup at Hawera today. Corumba, which is trained at Takanini by

R. C. Verner, was fifth in the Chalmers Handicap on the first day at Trentham. He ran a bold race and one good enough to give him a winning chance in this 11-furlong event.

The $3500 race has drawn an unusually strong field.

Corumba’s form is inclined to be patchy, but on his day he is more than useful. In the Chalmers he gave in only over the last furlong. He failed at Pukekohe in his previous start but was unluckily beaten by Taraleah at Te Aroha last month. Corumba will carry 7-6. Escameno and Domodossola. also look certain to run good races. GOOD RECORD Escameno is an underrated galloper. He ran third in the Rangitikei Cup last month on a light racing preparation. Last September he won the Hawke’s Bay Spring Gold Cup, beating a strong field. Escameno is sure to improve quickly with his outing at Bulls. He was prominent all the way and went under in a good finish. R. A. Jenkins will ride him again. Domodossola would appreciate any easing of the ground. He has won two out of his last four starts and J. F. Harris has been retained as his rider. Domodossola was seventh in the Chalmers at Trentham. He won the Wanganui Cup last month and the Stratford Gold Cup at New Year. Domodossola lasts a hard battle better than most. He will have the advantage of racing on his home track and his trainer, H. H. Mills, is certain to parade him at peak form. Harris, declined the ride on the form horse, Hagen’s Pleasure, to take the Domodossola mount. TOP-WEIGHTS Arbroath and Kilott are the top-weights. Arbroath was placed at the Taranaki meeting last week. He has trouble in winning beyond a mile and a quarter and was only a battlers’ third in the Taranaki Cup last Wednesday. Kalott failed in the Chalmers at Trentham after running second to Noir Filou at Hastings. She won well at Woodville last month and, inspite of her poor effort at Trentham, she can be given another chance.

Dolapal should chalk another victory when he contests the St Patrick’s Handicap, second leg of the double. Dolapal was fourth in the North Island Challenge Stakes at Trentham after three successive sprint wins. He missed his engagement in the Hutt Handicap on Saturday but his work last week left no doubts about his fitness. Dolapal was far from disgraced in the stakes. He showed up at the two furlongs and only weakened near the finish. He is top weight with 9-2 and has drawn well. Selections;
