The national women’s “champion-of-champion” singles bowls tournament, with an entry of 22 centre representatives, began yesterday and quickly provided a major upset.
Played on the automatic two-life system, the elimination of Mrs S. Winstanley (East Coast) after only two games was a surprise.

Mrs Winstanley is a women’s bowls gold star winner several times, has won national championships on 11 occasions, and took the national singles title two years ago.
Third Round.—Two-lifers: Mrs Skinner 20. Mrs Beeston 12; Mrs McCunn 18. Mrs Gardner 17; Mrs Dymond 17. Mrs Hopkins 12. One-lifers: Mrs de Jongh 17, Mrs O’Brien 10: Mrs Collinge 20, Mrs Slewart 12: Mrs Wilson 22. Mrs Rolleston 14: Mrs Hansen 32, Mrs Lightfoot 13; Mrs Harper 19, Mrs Mather 16.
She was outplayed. 15-5, by Mrs C. Rolleston (Waikato) in the first round, and then heavily beaten, 24-11, by Mrs M. Hopkins (Auckland). The Christchurch representative, Mrs E. Hirst, also lost her first two matches, both by narrow margins. Results were:—
