Good Start For Hatchwell
P. K. Hatchwell, Canterbury Rugby Representative and All Black trialist who emigrated to South Africa earlier this year, has quickly found his feet.
The sports editor of the “Natal Mercury,” the evening newspaper in Durban where Hatchwell is living, heard of his intended arrival on March 6 and notified the director of education in Natal and the president of one of the top Rugby clubs in Durban, the Berea Rovers. He was met at the boat, whisked through customs, and entertained by officials of the Rovers club, given a flat in the city for the first week and, after being interviewed by the director of education given a teaching position in the city. His wife was offered a. nursing position. He was training with the Berea Rovers only six hours after leaving the ship. Hatchwell has apparently
an excellent chance of being included in the Natal provincial Rugby team as the two wings and a centre from last season's team are not available. If Hatchwell does make the team he may play against the
1970 All Blacks in South Africa. The Natal province has frequently been the thorn in the side of All Black teams, and the 1960 All Blacks drew 6-6 with Natal.
