SELWYN HANOVER IN FORM FOR CUP

Although hl* timo was the slowest of the three free-for-all heat winners, Selwyn Hanover was particularly impressive at the trials held yesterday at Addington Raceway. He is going to be a leading contender in the Easter Cup series, which will start at Addington Raceway tomorrow Lordship showed great dash in winning the first heat from Beat Time, while Double Cross gained a dashing win in the other heat. All are Easter Cup rivals. Selwyn Hanover tracked Grande Garnison for most of his heat and with Allakasam he raced to the front with two furlongs and a half left. Over the final furlong he drew out and won by a length from Allakasam after recording 3min 34sec for the 13 furlongs, the last halfmile in 59 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 29sec. Selwyn Hanover looks in great order for the Easter Cup series, in which he is certain to be handicapped on the limit.

Allakasam went a splendid race for second, clear of Atanui with Bramble Hall right up, followed by Lustre Scott, Grande Garnison and Jacquinot Bay. The last-named, favourite for the Cheviot Cup, drifted a little early and did not appear to be completely at his ease when grit was thrown up by the horses in front of him. Later he put plenty of dash into his work. Lordship, after leading early, was handy to Cochrane later in the first heat and he sprinted away in the straight to win by a length after recording 3min 28 2-ssec. the last half-mile in Imin 1 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 4-ssec. Beat Time made up ground close to the finish and he was a length from Lordship, with the same distance to Chequer Board, which drifted badly early and showed dash to finish close up. Humphrey went easily to fourth, ahead of Spry, with a gap to Loyal Adios. Double Cross finished much too solidly for her rivals over

the final furlongs of the third heat and she won by two lengths from Udette after recording 3min 33 3-ssec, the last half-mile in imin 5 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 l-ssec. Double Cross looks to be right back to her best.

Corwar paced a useful race for third, with Royal Fame, Proudly and Rainbow Hall following. The Templeton trainer, C. C. Devine, produced two winners in the heats for two-year-olds. Andy Tee (Local Light—Petulus) finished strongly to win the first heat in 2min 51sec. the last half-mile in Imin 6 l-ssec, with Forest King (Lumber Dream—Ahumai) second, followed by Special Guest (Lumber Dream—Special Gust) and Sure Frost (Thurber Frost— Sure Angela).

Noble Frost (Thurber Frost— Light Heat) won the second heat in 2min 54 2-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 7 3-ssec. Well Received (Morriss Eden —Sally Walla) held second from Local Rose (Local Light—Becoming), with Jet Power (Garrison Han-over-Frith) making ground for fourth.

Fortunate (Garrison Hanover —Dillon’s Advice) led throughout the other heat and won by a head from Rossini (Bachelor Hanover—Hey Day) after recording 2min 47 4-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 4sec. and the final quarter in 30sec. They could be two of the better chances in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes on April 5.

Direct Return (Garrison Hanover—Susie Medoro) made up ground for third, ahead of Bonnie Jo (Johnny Globe— Douce). Other impressive efforts were returned by Magic Time, Mighty Forbes and Fri.

The place-getters in only one of the five qualifying heats were capable of 12 furlongs in 3min 21sec or better, the winner, Atheist (Fallacy—Mystic Star), in 3min 16 4-ssec. The winner is owned and trained by D. P. Grice at Prebbleton. Results:
