Big Crowds At Early Flower Show

The claims of Christchurch to be one of the. best flower producing areas in the commonwealth were supported when a high standard attracted large crowds at the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s early show at the society’s hall in Gloucester street yesterday. Mr A. H. McEwen, formerly of Scotland, said the exhibition of blooms was the finest display of early chrysanthemums he had seen in Australia or New Zealand. The women’s decorations committee of the society had skilfully arranged the wide variety of exhibits and the well-designed, diffused lighting of the hall gave fine effect to the glowing array of colours in the displays. “This show has the best display of early chrysanthemums I have seen in here,” said the judge, Mr McEwen. “It is now coming close to European standards and the show should now go on from strength to strength and it is hoped that a national early show will eventually be held in Christchurch.” It was very encouraging to see the high standard of the novice entries which were the best for a number of years, said Mr McEwen. The central island, display of chrysanthemums; exhibited by Mr L. Clark, contained more than 3000 blooms. Judges said this was the most comprehensive array of early blooms yet shown in Christchurch and was notable both for variety and effective arrangement. It won the Royal Horticultural Society's silver medal award. The flowers were placed so as to blend throughout the full colour range of the species from white, to yellows of various shades, to gold, apricot, peach, lilac, mauve and red. Mr N. W. Drain, one of the judges in the cut flower section, said the standard was high considering recent variations in weather. The society had continued with its policy of making the show as instructive as possible for the public in interesting aspects of garden culture, said the secretary, Mr J. C. Fraser. An example was the special exhibit showing different dahlia types and also a bookstall of gardening and horticultural publications with an assistant in attendance as well as a comprehensive display of pest control equipment and gardening implements. The exhibition comprises chrysanthemums, roses, dahlias, cut flowers, garden club displays, fruit and vegetables, pot plants and a decorative sectnon amounting to more than 600 entries. The exhibition will be open today and this evening. Results:— Chrysanthemums (Judge: Mr A. H. McEwen.) Premier Awards. —Best vase reflexed: G. Jones, Red Cloak. Best vase of incurved: A. L. MeIvor.
