Caldera In Office

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CARACAS, March 12.

Mr Rafael Caldera, a former lawyer and university professor, became President of Venezuela today in an historic, if austere ceremony in Caracas, which was surrounded by policemen and troops for the occasion. President Caldera, who is 52, is the first Venezuelan leader to succeed to power constitutionally, and peacefully, from the government of a rival political party. The heavy guard at the ceremony was posted to thwart any attack by Venezuela’s Communist guerrilla front, the Armed Forces of National Liberation.
