New Coaches For League Clubs
Only two new coaches, M. L. Cooke (Hornby)) and B. McConnon (Kaiapoi), have been named by Rugby league clubs in Christchurch for the 1969 season.
However, the Marist-West-ern Suburbs coach, P. V. Smith, will lead his players from the loose forward posi-' tion after a long career in club and representative foot- - ball as a utility back. The most interesting selection is that of Cooke, who replaces Mr R. Woodgate. A Kiwi between 1959 and 1964 and New Zealand’s captain for three seasons, Cooke re- : cently returned from Austra-
lia where he had four seasons as player-coach for Canberra. Cartilage and knee cap injuries necessitated an operation in Sydney before his return but it is possible that Cooke will play for Hornby in his specialist loose forward position. Cooke’s influence may assist Hornby to return to the form that won it five championships in six seasons before its failure to reach the premiership semi-finals last year.
