Two Country Teams Succeed

Country turns from the six Canterbury tennis sub*assoclatlons won two of their four matches against town teams at Wilding Park on Saturday. Country teams sometimes win four of these fixtures, often three and two was below average. The successful teams on Saturday were Malvern, which won for the third year in succession, and Hurunui. which had been beaten last year.

Malvern beat Town by 16 matches to 8; Hurunui won by 13 matches to 11; Town beat Mid-Canterbury by 18 matches to 6; beat Ellesmere by 13 matches to 11: beat North Canterbury by 16 matches to 8: and beat Banks Peninsula by 17 matches to 7.

Altogether 240 players from throughout Canterbury took part. Senior teams of six men and six women from each of the sub-associations and junior teams of four boys and four girls met similar teams from town.

Country teams have had a good record. North Canterbury won for seven years from 1957 to 1963 and again last year. In the same period Mid-Canterbury won five times, again in 1966 and again last year, Malvern four times and for the last three years in succession, Ellesmere five times to 1966, and Banks Peninsula once.

Hurunui, after not succeeding for many years won in 1962, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, lost last year and has now won again.

The two winning country teams were well served by their women. The Malvern women won all six singles and three doubles and contributed to three mixed doubles wins. The Hurunui women won four singles and two doubles.

Four country players won top singles—Mrs N. Gilmour (Malvern) beat Mrs D. Macdonald, Miss J. Habgood (Ellesmere) a prominent Canterbury junior and senior representative, beat Mrs P. Boatwood, J. Allin (North Canterbury) beat P. Angland, a Canterbury Wilding Shield player, and Mrs S. Mehrtens (North Canterbury) beat Miss S. Bruce, ■who has also represented Canterbury. The tall red-headed Allin beat Angland, 9-6 in a long and hardfought match. His passing shots were very quick and his volleying and smashing were especially sound. Angland is never an easy opponent and it was a fine win for a country player.

A. Hewitt, top for Malvern and one of the most prominent country players over many years—he has been a semi-final-ist in the Canterbury championships—lost to J. Martin, second in Canterbury, 4-9. Martin served particularly well and won points down the sidelines. I. Stanton and N. Alexander (Ellesmere) had a hard match. Stanton broke Alexander’s first service to lead. 3-0, but the country player fought back and they traded services until 8-5 when Stanton broke again. Mr* 8. Dalzell, formerly Mis*
