R. MOORE TO RIDE IN U.K. AGAIN

The former world speedway champion, R. Moore, of Christchurch, has decided to return to European competition at Easter after an absence of six years.

Moore ended months of speculation when he announced his intention on Saturday at Templeton Stadium after competing in the international match race series against the world champion, I. Mauger, and O. Fundin. of Sweden, winner of five world championships.

Moore, who has held the world title twice, is now 35. In recent weeks he has been approached by several clubs, but has decided to return to Wimbledon, the only overseas club he has ridden for. He has agreed on terms with the Wimbledon promoter (Mr R. Green) and although at this stage he is only prepared to commit himself to one season it is likely that he will go back again in 1970. His main reason for returning to European competition is h-is love of the sport, but while he is away he hopes to get some new ideas for his sideshow business, if his form at Templeton is any indication, he should be a strong contender for the

next world championship, which will be held in London. He won the title in 1954 and 1956 and was runner-up on three other occasions.

A bad crash In 1963 seemed to signal the end of his international career.

But in 1966 he was persuaded to don his racing leathers for a match race against another former world finalist, G. Mardon, at Templeton. His appearances gradually became more frequent and it was not long before victories over visiting world-class riders showed that he had lost none of his old skill. He won the New Zealand championship a few weeks ago for a record fourth time. Moore wiM return to Christchurch at the end of the European season and although he will be very busy with his sideshow business should still find time to race at Templeton. He is leaving his wife and family behind this time but if he goes back for the 1970 season will take them with him.
