Obituary

MAJOR F. POND The death occurred in Picton recently of Major Frederick Pond, who for 20 years, until bis retirement in 1949, taught physical training and was officer in command of cadets at Christ’s College. He was 84.

Educated at St Augustine's School, Norwich, Major Pond later joined the Middlesex Regiment. He once gained third place in a gymnastic competition at Aidershot open to all Imperial Forces, and was also a champion boxer for his regiment In the First World War. while serving in France. Major Pond was promoted captain in his regiment only three days before he was taken prisoner. In 1920, he became garrisoi physical training officer at Gibralter. On his return to England. Major Pond taught for six years at Hastings University School, and at Rye Grammar School. He joined the staff at Christ’s College In September, 1929. where he took charge of cadet training, gymnastics, physical training, and sports generally. In 1944, he received the Efficiency Decoration for 20 years commissioned service, and next year was promoted to major. For some time after leaving Christ’s College, Major Pond, continued to teach physical education and boxing at Medbury School.

Major Jond was a keen member of the Opawa Bowling Club, the Christchurch Tin Hat Club, and the Canterbury Jockey Club. Major Pond is survived by four sons, and seven daughters.
