Road Safety Pamphlet

The Ministry of Transport in Christchurch has prepared a pamphlet giving road-safety advice for parents of children starting school. The pamphlet contains the following five suggestions on road safety: “Go with your child to school for die first day or two, but don't ‘take’ him. Let him take you! In this way, he will learn to take responsibility and make his own judgments when crossing the road.

“Discuss and arrange a suitable and safe route for him to take to and from school, and check occasionally to see that he keeps to it. “Emphasise the need to come straight home from school —playing with friends on the way home can be verydangerous, even in relatively quiet areas. “If there is a need to collect your child after school at any time, whether in the car or not, wait by the school entrance and never opposite. No matter how good his safety training may have been, when he sees you, all could be forgotten in his hurry to reach you. “Abide by all school and traffic rules yourself, and so set him a good example." Next year, it is hoped that parents will receive the pamphlet when children are enrolled at schools.
