TOKANUI VILLAS
Criticism Of Size (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 5. The proposed large villas at Tokanui Psychopaedic Hospital, near Te Awamutu, have been criticised by the president of the Intellectually Handicapped Children's Society, Dr D. M. G. Beasley.
Small units were better suited to the intellectually handicapped than were the 50-bed villas proposed by the Health Department, he said. “It is with dismay that we learn of the department's decision,” Dr Beasley said. “We believe that such accommodation is not suitable for the retarded and would not meet approval of authorities abroad.”
Dr Beasley said he had been told the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) that it would mean a delay of up to three years to drop the plans and build smaller villas, and that the demand for accommodation was too great for that delay, “We agree that the children and their parents should not be penalised by having to wait. But we must make a 'protest at the type of accommodation being provided.”
