Town Hall Ceremony Next Week
The Governor-General (Sir Arthur Porritt) will lay the foundation stone of the Christchurch Town Hall at 2.30 p.m. on February 12. This will be his first public engagement during his period of residence in Christchurch.
Cr H. G. Hay, chairman of the Town Hall committee, said yesterday that the Victoria Square ceremony would include the handing over of a substantial cheque from funds raised by Town Hall Promotion by Sir James Hay, president of Town Hall Promotion, to the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey), who would receive it on behalf of all the local bodies involved. Mr D. B. Rich, chairman of the Waimairi County Council, would speak on behalf of the other local bodies. “Invited guests will include local body members from all the councils participating in the project and a
number of persons who have been closely associated with Town Hall Promotion in various fund-raising activities during the 12 years of its existence,” said Cr Hay. “Members of the public are also invited to be present at the ceremony, which will probably not last more than 45 minutes.
“Access to seating will be from Colombo Street only and those intending to be present are requested to be seated not later than 2.15 p.m.
“It is hoped there will be a large attendance of the public at this important function,” said Cr Hay.
