U.S. Writer Distressed
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Feb. 6. The American gossip columnist, Walter Winchell, who is 72 and has not written a column since January 11, is taking “an indefinite vacation to get his bearings" after the suicide of his only son.
A spokesman for the MeNaught Syndicate said Mr Winchell was resting but had promised he would be back. His son shot himself on Christmas Day. A freelance writer in receipt of welfare assistance, he left a widow and two children.
