BERKELEY CAMPUS
Emergency Declared (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SACRAMENTO (California), Feb. 6. The Governor of California (Mr Ronald Reagan) yesterday declared a state of “extreme emergency” at the University of California’s Berkeley campus, scene of violent police-student clashes on Tuesday. Though the big campus was relatively quiet today, Mr Reagan ordered as many state highway patrolmen as necessary to restore order at Berkeley. Police acted firmly today to forestall any repetition of the violent clashes that rocked the university on Tuesday, landing 10 persons in hospital with head wounds and another 20 in gaol. Scores of officers took up positions at the main campus entrance before noon and made sure that striking students did not form a solid picket line to prevent nonstrikers from going to classes.
