TEACHERS’ COURSES

Attendance Of 261

Three teachers' refresher courses dealing with mathematics for junior schools, languages in the standard classes and curriculum planning in large schools, were officially opened at Lincoln College and the School for the Deaf at Sumner last evening. About 261 teachers from throughout the South Island and the lower half of the North Island as well as one teacher from the Chatham Islands are attending the courses, which will each last for a week. The course at the School for the Deaf is on curriculum planning in large schools. It is the first time that the topic has been dealt with in a teachers’ refresher course in New Zealand. The course director, Mr R. S. Jenkins, headmaster of Chisnallwood Intermediate School, said that lecturers would discuss the historical significance of the curriculum, and the principles of curriculum planning.

There was every possibility that another course dealing with the same topic could be held again next year, he said. The other two courses are both being held at Lincoln College. Each course will include several lectures, discussion groups, and workshops.
