BRISBANE. Two top world professionals

were beaten in the third round of

the Australian open tennis cham-

pionships yesterday.

Both K. Rosewall (Australia) and the American veteran, P. Gonzales, went down in straight sets.

Rosewall lost to the Spanish professional, A. Gitneno, and then on the same court Gonzales lost to the Australian Davis Cup player, W. Bowrey. Gonzales did not have the pace to get to some of Bowrey’s well placed shots on the slow court After Bowrey had won the first set, 6-3, he took charge and won the next set, 6-0, against a hesitant Gonzales. Recovery Bid Bowrey gained an early service break in the final set and led, 6-5, with his own service to follow but Gonzales made a desperate effort to get back into the match when he broke back.

But Bowrey—ls years younger—kept playing strong,

attacking tennis and he fini ally took the set, 11-9. The court was wet and Gimeno handled the conditions much better than Rosewall, taking only 80 minutes fto complete a 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 i victory. Gimeno wore spikes , throughout the match but Rosewall changed several times from sandshoes into I spikes and back again without at any stage looking confident about keeping his footing. Twelve games passed bejfore a service break and when it came it gave Gimeno the first set. Then Rosewall dropped two successive ser|viee games to trail 0-5 in the ; second set. I When Rosewall dropped I |his serve again in the third! game of the third set, it was • obvious he had little chance | of getting back into the! match. Both players held serI vice for the rest of the match before Gimeno took the final | set, 6-4. Stolle Untroubled I The Australian professional, iF. Stolle, took a little more I than an hour to coast to a 18-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over the | Australian Davis Cup player, A. Stone. I Stolle showed litle sign of being affected by the stomach muscle injury which had troubled him for the last; week.
