(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) ANKARA (Turkey), January 7. While the United States Ambassador, Mr Robert Komer, lunched, students overturned and burned his official car yesterday on the campus of the Middle East Technical University.
Hundreds of students gathered round the flaming Cadillac and shouted, “Damn America; get out Komer." But Mr Komer, who previously served as chief of the United States pacification programme in Vietnam, refused to cut short his lunch with the university rector, Kemal Kurdas, a short disitance away. Mr Komer later issued a statement through the United States Embassy saying: “It is ;disappointing indeed when a representative of an allied
country, who is invited to
■ 'lunch by the president of a I major university, has his car . overturned and burned by a I small group of extremists. . “It is particularly regretJ table when this occurs at ; Metu, a school to which the _ United States itself has proJ vided so much friendly sup- ’ port.” When the Turkish Foreign ‘ Minister, Ihasn Sabri Caglay- . angil, heard of the incident,
he broke away from deliberations in Parliament and quickly issued a statement expressing deep regret.
