RASPBERRY SHIPMENT
10 Tons For Australia
I A trial shipment of about !10 tons of deep-frozen raspberries, grown in Christchurch, would be sent to Australia next month, said a member of the Canterbury Marketing Committee, Mr C. A. Harrow, yesterday. Most of the raspberries, l packed in 451 b cartons, were required for ice-cream and !jam factories. Mr Harrow said he understood that Nelson and Waimate growers also were planning to send large trial shipments to Australia this season.
Tasmania, the normal source of supply, was unable to meet the demand because the Tasmanian bush fires had substantially reduced production.
Much of the Christchurch consignment was already stored, and he understood that the raspberries would go to Australia in one of the new roll-on Tasman ferries. The Christchurch, Nelson and Waimate exports were a very small proportion of the New Zealand crop, but if the trial shipments were a success, and if the potential in Australia was reliable from year to year. New Zealand raspberry growers could in, crease their plantings.
