Denial By Kennedy

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuler—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Jan. 6. Senator Edward Kennedy has denied that his election on Friday to a major Senate leadership post was the start of an attempt to win the Presidency of the United States. He told reporters after his election as Assistant Senate Majority Leader that he had stood against Senator Russell Long (Democrat, Louisiana) for the post because he felt it was important that the Democrat-controlled Congress should carefully scrutinise the legislation proposed by the Republican Presidentelect (Mr Richard Nixon). But by all accounts the last surviving Kennedy brother has enhanced his already considerable personal reputation by challenging and defeating Senator Long, who is chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and one of the most powerful men in Congress.
