The first day’s play in the Northern Districts and Otago Plunket Shield match at Smallbone Park yesterday was finally abandoned without a ball being bowled at 4.30 p.m. Although the weather was fine, heavy rain for two days had saturated the pitch and outfield. Northern Districts has made one change to the 12 players used against Auckland and Central Districts. The former team captain, H. T. Schuster, has been dropped and replaced by the Hamilton batsman, A. D. G. Roberts, who played in two Plunket Shield matches last season. The Otago batsman, N. M.
