Adventure Camp Begins At Arthur’s Pass
The first of two adventure i camps for boys between the J ages of 10 and 13 from Canterbury and Westland began ' | yesterday in the Andrews ■ Stream area of Arthur’s Pass ’! National Park. i ] Until January 17, when, the second camp will end, 32 boys . will take part. There will 1 be 16 boys in each camp, ’ which will last for five days. • The boys will be under the • guidance of a park ranger at , all times and will be given basic instruction in camping, ; tramping, first-aid, trapping, L survival, shelters, map and . compass reading, ropes, knots > and river crossing. i The chairinan of the park > board (Mr M. J. Fitzgerald) said yesterday that about 140
boys had applied for the camps and the 32 selected had been chosen by ballot on a proportionate basis between Canterbury and Westland. Many of the boys chosen did not belong to other organisations and would not normally have an opportunity of taking part in similar activities, he said. With the exception of an extra day in each camp this year, the camp would be similar to one held in 1967, he said. As well as providing an opportunity to take part in an adventure camp it would also enable the boys to appreciate what was in the park. Mr Fitzgerald said he hoped that the camp could become an annual event. It was also hoped that eventually other youth groups and organisations could assist with the planning and running of the camp.
