Fire At Sea A fire developed from an electrical fault in a telephone circuit on the Royal New Zealand Navy’s supply ship Endeavour, on her way to the ‘Antarctic, early yesterday 1 morning. “The fire was 'quickly isolated and was soon under control,” said the Resiident Naval Officer at Christi church (Lieutenant I Commander V. W. Fifield). Scroll For Mayor A scout from Kurashiki. Japan, will present the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) with a letter and scroll of greetings from the Mayor of Kurashiki, at a ceremony at the national scout jamboree at Kaiapoi this evening. The deputy Mayor (Cr H. P. Smith) will also be at the camp and he will receive greetings from the Mayor of Suva from a member of the Fijian contingent. Open Day An open day for boys aged between 11J and 14 will be held at the sea cadet camp on Ripa Island next Sunday. Boys interested in joining the cadets will be taken on a launch trip to Ripa Island and the cadet base at Cass Bay and may also visit the training ship Cornwell at Redcliffs. They will be provided with lunch and afternoon tea. The Resident Naval Officer in Christchurch (LieutenantCommander V. W. Fifield) said yesterday that those interested in attending the open day should get in touch with him at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus. Supply Ships The first supply ships for the new season have reached Winter Quarters Bay, in MeMurdo Sound, for unloading to American bases. A fuel ship, the Alatna, and the Private John R. Towle are both alongside hard ice waiting for the Glacier and the Burton Island to finish clearing the channel into the bay and smash the ice round the unloading area. Ambulance Cadets One hundred St John Ambulance Brigade cadets between the ages of 11 and 17 from throughout New Zealand are attending the brigade’s biennial 10-day cadet camp at Waddington. The camp, under the command of the district officer at the Christchurch headquarters (Mr G. J. Hutton.), will end on Thursday. Twelve officers are also attending the camp. As well as recreational activities the boys are taking part in proficiency work such as camping and badge work.
