TROTTING New Brighton Cup Stake Up $500

The stake for the New Brighton Cup has been increased for the third successive year. This year’s contest, to be run at the club’s autumn meeting at Addington Raceway on February 15, will be worth $3500, $5OO more than last year and $lOOO more than in 1967.

Altogether the club will distribute $14,900 in stakes, and a trophy valued at $2OO to the owner of the winner of the New Brighton Cup, for the ninerace programme on cup night. The winning owner will receive 52275 and the trophy. Last year the winner’s share of the New Brighton Cup stake was $1950 and a $lOO trophy. Last year the cup catered for horses assessed at 2min llsec and faster, but this time invitation conditions will apply. The limit for the twomile event is still 2min llsec but horses assessed at 2min 12sec are eligible under the

conditions governing invitation races. The New Brighton Cup will be the first leg of a straight T.A.B. double. The second leg of this double will be the Autumn Trotting Handicap, a $2OOO 13-furlong event for trotters. This race, which has a 2min 13sec limit, will be run under invitation conditions and 2min 14sec class trotters will be eligible. The Autumn Handicap will replace the Ordeal Trotting Handicap, which has been the feature race for trotters on the club’s autumn programme since 1965. In future the Ordeal Handicap will be one of the major attractions at the club’s spring or September meetings. The mobile barrier will be used for four races on cup night. These will be the O. Hutchinson Stakes, a $l7OO

sprint event for 2min 15sec class pacers, the $l5OO Twilight Stakes and the $ll5O Burwood Stakes, both 13furlong events for 2min 16sec and 2min 17sec class pacers respectively, and the $lOOO Two-year-old Stakes, to be run over a mile and a quarter. The slower class trotters are catered for in the Waimairi Handicap. This $l2OO 13furlong event is for trotters assessed at 2min 17sec and not faster than 2min 15sec. Pacers assessed on 2min 13sec and 2miin 14sec will compete over 13 furlongs for a $l9OO stake in the W. E. Desmond Handicap. Holders of probationary licences will get the chance to show their skill in the Wainoni Handicap, a $950 13furlong event for 2min 18sec class pacers restricted to probationary drivers.
