Fine performances by the New Zealand Dragon class yachts Amanda and Komutu in an invitation race yesterday boosted the chances of the English Speaking Union Cup crossing the Tagman. Amanda, skippered by R. Stewart, and the Queensland yacht Cynthia II (J. Cuneo) staged a thrilling finish, the New Zealander gaining the verdiet by a couple of boat lengths. At the completion of the first triangle Southern Cross IL with the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron commodore, M. Tyquin, at the helm, led by 15 sec from Komutu (R. Stone). Stewart pushed Amanda to the utmost on the second punch to windward and she came from a long way back to take the lead, which she held to the' finish.

The first heat of the cup series will be sailed on the same course today.
