International Alley Jamboree Highlight
A feature of the international jamboree at Kaiapoi is the International Alley. In this alley scouts from most of the countries participating in the jamboree have marquees and act as combined trade and tourist publicists. At the head of the alley is the historical court, containing mementoes of early scouting, including pennants made to celebrate the relief of Mafeking, early uniforms and flags of various New Zealand troops, and early photographs depicting scenes in the history of scouting.
Next dpor is the most futuristic of displays, aptly named the “Space Age,” exhibited by the United States contingent. Assistance has been given to this display by the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other research bodies. Included in the exhibits are numerous slides and enlargements of photographs taken by manned and unmanned space-craft and a model of an Apollo space capsule. A large part of the exhibit is given over to the Ghost
[balloon project and an inflated Ghost ballon and a [ meteorological ballon hover overhead. Working displays illustrate the functions of radiosondes and other meteorological equipment. Next to this large display is the camp radio station, which broadcats on shortwave bands daily from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The camp meteorological office, with displays illustrating the way in which a weather map is prepared, is further down the alley. Towards the end of the alley is the United States centre with a teepee containing American Indian artifacts and clothing, including a tomahawk and peace pipe.
