Cableway On Mount Egmont Planned

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 6. Proposals have been invited by the Egmont National Park Board for the installation of a gondola or cableway system to the summit of Mt Egmont.

The calling of proposals marked the first step in the commercial development of the higher slopes of the 8260 ft peak, the board’s secretary (Mr W. Scott) said today. The board would advertise the calling of proposals on a

natibnal scale and applications would close on December 31, 1970, Mr Scott said. The two-year period would give, interested parties two winters in which to gather data. Specialist advice would probably be sought by the board before a decision was reached and even then any decision would have to be approved by the National Parks Authority, he said. Today’s move was welcomed by parties which have urged the commercial development of the mountain. , The main opposition has come from alpine clubs and the Taranaki branch of the Forest and Bird Protection Society.
