OUT OF TOUCH

Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ' NICE, Dec. 25. Two young Frenchmen who have been living in a eave for the last four months to test man's reactions in conditions which future space travellers may have to endure, do not know that it is Christmas. While the three American astronauts were circling the moon, the French “speleonauts,” as they call themselves, quietly carried on the experiment they began on August 22. A geologist, Mr Michel Siffre, organiser of the test, today announced that the two men would emerge from the 220 ft-deep Oliver Cave, In the Massif de I’Audlberghe, north of Nice, on January 15. One volunteer, Mr Phillippe Englender, aged 30, beUeves today is November 15, and Mr Jacques Chabert, aged 29, thinks it is December 7. Both men, with no means of gauging the passage of time, have unconsciously adopted a 48-hour day, Mr Englender as Carly as three months ago and Mr Chabert only 10 days ago.
