SPANISH CLAIM
Time Limit On Britain (N.Z.P. A. -Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 17. The United Nations General Assembly’s Trusteeship Committee has called on Britain to end its 263-year-old control of Gibraltar by next October. I It is the first time that a [committee of the United Nations—which has always supported Spain’s claim to The Rock—has imposed a time limit on Britain. The proposal was contained in a resolution approved by the committee in a vote of 66 to 18, with 31 abstentions. The resolution was sponsored by 24 Latin American, Asian and African States. Britain described it as “wholly unacceptable." General Assembly resolutions carry no enforcement power. The adoption of the resolution came after the breakdown of behind-the-scenes attempts at a compromise between the Spanish Ambassador to the United Nations (Mr Jamie de Pinies) and Britain’s chief United Nations representative (Lord Caradon).
